Stephen Cane
DEVELOPING SPECIALIST SPEECH AND LANGUAGE THERAPIST (NEUROLOGY)
Stephen received his undergraduate degree in English Language Studies at The University of Winchester. He worked in mental health for some time afterwards, becoming qualified in areas such as CBT, DBT and Mindfulness, as well as managing a service. Upon studying his course and spending this time working with individuals with complex mental health needs, he realised his passion lies in applying his knowledge of the English language to support individuals to have more independence and autonomy. It was at this time he went to The University of Essex to study his master’s in Speech and Language Therapy. On this course, he discovered great joy in working with the paediatric population.
Since then, Stephen has spent the entirety of his time within the profession working with a paediatric client group, ages between 4-18. He currently leads a team of speech and language therapists for a co-education independent school in Surrey alongside his work for Linguistic Resolutions, as well as seeing some clients independently. This range of roles allows Stephen to do what he enjoys best; working with the child of course but also to work alongside school staff, multidisciplinary team members and then within the wider community with parents and family members.
His experiences include supporting children who stammer, children with speech and language disorders/delays but most predominantly for supporting children who have ASD, ADHD and DCD, particularly with social, pragmatic and emotional difficulties. He is trained in Makaton and PROMPT and is constantly looking for ways to increase his professional development in areas of interest and expertise.
