Kate Balzer

SPECIALIST SPEECH & LANGUAGE THERAPIST (NEUROLOGY)

Kate qualified as a Speech and Language Therapist from UCL in 1999 and has since specialised in working with adults with communication and swallowing difficulties arising from acquired neurological conditions, in neuro rehab, elderly care and mental health settings including Guys and St Thomas’ NHS Trust, St George’s University Hospital, the Wolfson Neuro Rehabilitation Centre, Bethlem Royal Hospital and Broadmoor Hospital. She began in independent practice in 2011, leaving her role as Principal SLT at a London community NHS trust in 2017.

Kate has since developed a wealth of experience working as a treating therapist in medico-legal cases, with clients presenting with difficulties ranging from cognitive communication difficulties to disorders of consciousness. Her decades of experience in the community have led Kate to prioritise an holistic, real life approach to therapy intervention, alongside the interdisciplinary team and significant others.

Kate is also passionate about facilitating project-based groups, both face to face and virtual, and is developing this area of evidence based practice within the Linguistic Resolutions team. She is actively engaged in exploring various modes of supervision and to that end recently wrote a chapter with two peers, published in the book Supervision in Speech and Language Therapy: Personal Stories and Professional Wisdom (Speechmark, 2024).
