Emilia Muntoni

SPEECH & LANGUAGE THERAPY ASSISTANT / NEURO REHAB ASSISTANT

Emilia's interest in Neurological Rehabilitation began during her Psychology A-Levels. She became increasingly fascinated with the neurological facets of communication, particularly the ways in which different areas of the brain influence various aspects of speech and language.

Her passion for the field of Speech and Language Therapy led her to pursue an undergraduate degree in English Language and Linguistics. During her final year of study, she gained valuable work experience shadowing qualified Speech and Language Therapists. Her first placement involved working in a virtual clinic, conducting history-taking sessions with children during their initial appointments. The second placement consisted of shadowing therapists in the Adult Service within an acute Stroke Unit. These experiences allowed Emilia to witness first-hand the impact therapy can have on patients, particularly in speech and language rehabilitation and dysphagia management.

Emilia has worked as a Speech and Language Therapy Assistant for over a year within a highly specialised learning disability and autism spectrum disorder service for men, supporting service users with significant communication needs. In this role, she has encountered the diversity of communication challenges and the importance of tailoring therapy to individual needs, working with non-verbal, selectively mute, and minimally verbal service users. She has delivered therapy in both one-to-one and group sessions, focusing on improving functional communication and empowering service users to make choices and achieve independence.

In addition, Emilia has conducted research and received training from a Speech Therapist to use and implement various approaches, including intensive interaction, Talking Mats (Foundation Level Certified), low-tech AAC, and social stories/easy reads. She is also Makaton Level 1 and 2 certified.

In 2025, Emilia will begin an MSc in Speech and Language Therapy and looks forward to delving deeper into the Neurological Rehabilitation field within her role at Linguistic Resolutions.
