Treatment of Dyspraxia (speech planning difficulties)

Back

The specifics depend largely on your assessment results. As a vague guide:

  • Oro-motor (facial) exercises may need to be worked on.
  • Functional vocabulary lists are usually drawn up between you, family and your therapist. These can be worked through intensively to improve functional speech output.
  • We may start with automatic speech work (eg saying your name, days of the week, months of the year etc).
  • Vocabulary drills can be useful to work on where word length gradually increases.
  • We aim to improve your self-monitoring of speech.
  • Use of visual aids (eg a mirror, articulogram (diagram showing lip / tongue position etc) can assist speech in some cases.
  • Weaning off cues with time to promote your independence.
  • Provision of computer / video software so that you can practice speech at home.
  • We may use reading aloud within therapy.
